Initially, Bernadette passed a lie-detector test, but after six months police realized she had been lying.
Bernadette confessed to her parents in a letter.
Kirstens family say they believe Bernadette fabricated the party invitation with premeditated plans to murder her.
She was 23 years old upon her release.
Bernadette has since changed her name and lives in Oregon with her family.
