The art of making monsters real.

Sometimes my brain works in strange ways.
Such is the case when I saw the trailer for the fantasy/adventure filmSketch.

The Mildred-monster from “Korman’s Kalamity,” episode 13 of the second season ofTales from the Crypt.
What is Sketch?
My brain, naturally, went straight to horror.
Specifically, to the goofy horror of a second-season episode of the show titled Kormans Kalamity.

The Tales From The Crypt Episode
Kormans Kalamity first aired in 1990.
Kormans Kalamity is definitely one of the sillier episodes of the series.
I particularly enjoy the zombie that emerges from an old refrigerator.

Sketchis scheduled to be released on August 6, 2025.
Whats The Point?
So, why do I bring this up?
Well, Ill take any excuse to talk aboutTales from the Crypt.

I could never forget the zombie from this episode.
I love it, and its a show I need to revisit in its entirety.
Sketchwill almost certainly be nothing like this episode ofTales from the Crypt, but their foundations arent so different.
Amber and Korman both use art as a way of expressing their emotions during a rough time in life.
Both characters encounter something magical which brings their art to life.
Both are (presumably) freed from their negative emotions after their inner monsters become outer.
Its basically the same story, only vastly different.
Its like when people say that there are no original ideas anymore.
Thats debatable, but its also beside the point.
you’re able to start with an idea thats similar to something else and still make it unique.
Its not likeSketchor Kormans Kalamity have a monopoly on the idea of drawings coming to life.
The beauty in art is seeing how inspiration can be taken in so many different directions.
